voters but romney leads among the all important likely voters. it's why both pull out the big guns on the trail calling in bill clinton and chris christie, while the running mates are holed up in debate prep. they face off thursday in kentucky. one month out, and we start today with "washington post" political columnist dana millback. >> hi, s.e. >> hi. let's start with with the pugh poll. it puts hit ahead likely voters and registered voters and he's made big gains among women voters and middle class voters. is it about one debate night? >> it's time for obama to panic. we did this a couple of weeks ago when the polls were the other way, and then it was time for romney to panic. it's probably not time for anybody to panic. this race is now what it was weeks ago, months ago, and that's a fairly close race it will on election day. it's decided by two, three percentage points. we've seen the bounces and swings. this one is going in romney's direction. it appears if you look at the battleground states, it still favors obama. nothing has fundamentally changed. if things keep move innin

done. >> it has never been done. >> jack kennedy lowered -- >> now you're jack kennedy? >> both campaigns are claiming victory. >> mr. ryan said that governor romney was a car guy. if they have an elevator stacked on their couch, i guess he was. >> there was one person on stage who was thought full, respect l respectful, steady and poised, the kind of person you want to turn to in a crisis and that was the next vice president of the united states, paul ryan. i see these obama rallies and they're chanting four more years. our cheer is four more weeks. >> guys, i have to say, that was easily my most favorite debate of the season so far. i think biden was the clear winner, gave democrats the shot of energy they needed, hammered them on the 47%, hammered him on lying, said the facts matter. the moment where they talked about abortion was so destructive because ryan said i'm going to make you all do what i believe in my catholic doctrine and biden said, hey, i believe this, i respect catholic doctrine but i'll let you do what you want to do and made the case that the supreme court i

that were taken, you know, friday night and in to the weekend and they continue to confirm that mitt romney's really surging in all the right places and that would become a problem. if there's sort of, you know, a draw between biden and ryan, where we say, boy, they both really did pretty well. ryan held his own, biden didn't say something crazy and they both have a lot of knowledge if not experience but they're credible and qualified and the obama ticket didn't mess up and then you saw in the polls more of a settling, i think you'd have a more competitive situation going in to tuesday night when obama has to face romney again. but if you see a great performance by ryan, some kind of self emolation of biden and surging past president obama, it's really going to put the pressure on president obama to do something starkly different on tuesday than he did last week. >> a.b. it's s.e. and nice to have a fellow initialled guest on the panel. >> that's right. >> do you think he's looking at the biden-ryan debate as an opportunity to finally right the ship or thinking just get this done and get me

at libya or israel or yemen, he's sort of all over the board. >> how does mitt romney challenge it when he's doing the policy that he would like to do? >> it's difficult, because there's criticisms for this president from the right and the left. it's very hard to come out and make both arguments that somehow he's failing the right and left on foreign policy. >> when you try to -- >> it seems like the strategy politically that romney has used on this since he starpted running in this cycle has been let's go -- whatever the events of the day are in foreign policy, whether it's libya exploding in march 2011 or afghanistan, whatever it is, whatever the events of the day are, the official position of the romney campaign has to be, obama is wrong. then they work backwards and work backwards and say, this is why he's wrong. this is why he's weak. the result is when you look at everything he said, total, utter incoherence. you have him suggesting today potentiwtentially military intervention in libya. >> also in iran. >> what did he say when we started -- the intervention in libya began with nato?
